Is Money Controlling You?

Many times, the enemy tries to whisper lies that keep us bound by shame, fear, guilt — and yes, even money. As a woman and perhaps as a single mother, you carry so much on your shoulders — work, home, children, and all the responsibilities in between. Yet, the one area that often slips through the cracks is your relationship with money — how you see it, and how you manage it.

When this happens, it can create a whirlwind of stress, pressure, and feelings of guilt or inadequacy. But these struggles often come from deeper roots — old wounds and beliefs formed from past experiences. And it’s through those cracks of brokenness that the enemy finds his way in, whispering lies about your worth and your ability to rise above.

Let’s take a moment to explore how our past experiences can shape the way we handle money — often without even realizing it. These patterns can quietly control us, keeping us stuck in cycles of financial stress and allowing the enemy to use those struggles to hold us back.

Have you ever found yourself buying things you don’t really need, just to impress others? If so, you’re not alone. This behavior often traces back to moments in the past when you may have been criticized for what you had — or didn’t have — or made to feel “less than” because of your appearance or status. Those experiences leave an imprint on your heart and mind, and in an effort to protect you from rejection, your brain creates a belief that your worth is tied to what you own or how others perceive you.

This is one of the enemy’s greatest strategies — to keep you bound and distracted from the life of peace and purpose God designed for you. In Luke 12:15, we are warned: “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” This powerful verse reminds us that our worth is not found in what we own, and that greed only traps us in a cycle of wanting more — a cycle that leads to financial bondage and emotional exhaustion.

True transformation begins when you renew your mind and take back control from the enemy by grounding your worth in what God says about you. As 1 John 3:1 declares: “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”

Indeed, you are a child of God — fully loved, chosen, and worthy. Your value does not come from possessions, status, or wealth, but from your identity in Him. If you carry wounds of rejection or lack, don’t allow the enemy to use those cracks to whisper lies. Instead, rest in the truth that Jesus gave His life so you could live free, whole, and abundant.
